Pickleball Rules: The Complete Guide (2026)

Pickleball's ruleset is short enough to learn before your first game and specific enough that experienced players still debate edge cases. You need about 10 minutes to cover the essentials.

This guide covers all of them - serving, the kitchen, two-bounce rule, scoring, faults, and line calls - plus the specific rules that trip up beginners most and exactly why.

1. The Serve

The serve must be hit underhand with an upward arc. At contact, the paddle must be moving upward and the highest point of the paddle head must be below the wrist. The serve must be hit diagonally cross-court into the opponent's service box. The ball must clear the kitchen (non-volley zone) and land in the service box - landing on the kitchen line is a fault. Both feet must be behind the baseline at contact. The server must call the score before every serve.

2. The Two-Bounce Rule

After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it. The serving team must then let that return bounce once before playing it. After those two bounces (one on each side), either team can volley the ball out of the air. This rule prevents the serving team from rushing the net and volleying immediately after serving.

3. The Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)

A 7-foot zone on each side of the net is the non-volley zone, universally called the kitchen. You cannot volley (hit the ball before it bounces) while standing in the kitchen or touching the kitchen line. Momentum from a volley that carries you into the kitchen is also a fault, even if the ball was already hit. You can enter the kitchen any time to play a ball that has already bounced there.

4. Scoring

Only the serving team can score a point. When the serving team faults, the serve passes to the other team (side-out) - no point is scored. Games are played to 11 points, win by 2. In doubles, each player on the serving team gets a chance to serve before a side-out, except at the very start of the game when only one serve is allowed before the first side-out. Score is called as three numbers before every serve: serving team score, receiving team score, server number (1 or 2).

5. Faults

A fault ends the rally. Faults include: ball lands out of bounds; ball bounces twice before being returned; player, paddle, or clothing touches the net during play; ball is volleyed from the kitchen or kitchen line; serve lands in the kitchen or fails to clear it; ball hits a player before bouncing; player reaches over the net to hit a ball that has not crossed to their side.

6. Line Calls

Balls landing on any boundary line are in. The only exception: a serve landing on the kitchen line is a fault. Players call lines on their own side of the court. If uncertain, the benefit of the doubt goes to the hitting player (call it in). Disputed calls should be replayed if no agreement can be reached.

7. Net Rules

The net is 36 inches high at the posts and 34 inches at the center. If the ball clips the top of the net and lands in the correct area of play, it is live and play continues (there is no let rule in modern pickleball - USA Pickleball removed the let serve rule in 2021). If the ball passes through or under the net, it is a fault.

8. Out-of-Bounds

The ball must land within the court boundaries. Balls landing outside any line are out. A ball that lands on a line (except the kitchen line on a serve) is in. If the ball passes outside the net posts rather than over the net, it is still in play as long as it lands in the correct court area.

Doubles vs Singles Rules

Most pickleball is played in doubles. The rules above apply to both formats with one key difference: in doubles, each player on the serving team gets a turn to serve before a side-out. The server calls a third number (1 or 2) before each serve to indicate which server they are.

In singles, there is only one server per side. The server serves from the right side when their score is even and from the left side when their score is odd. Score is called as two numbers (server score, receiver score) rather than three.
